The Castaways A Novel Elin Hilderbrand 9780316043892 Books

I just finished this book and I did like it . I do enjoy how this author writes, very clean and not too wordy. I like that she is able explain the scenery, the weather the feeling of any one of the characters without going on and on for pages. The main characters in this book, eight best friends, were well developed and you got to know the type of person, their personality and their flaws all in one. And some were very sad, self centered individuals. They are all trying to come to over come their grief in the loss of one of the couples due to a drowning who leave behind 7 year old twins. And they all have secrets. It was a good read, but toward the end I do believe it dragged on to me and could of been wrapped up in under the 420 pages. But I do enjoy her writing. I'll continue reading her other books. Her stories do flow nicely.

The Castaways A Novel Elin Hilderbrand 9780316043892 Books Reviews

Characters as well developed as the Castaways are a rare treat. The book weaves together their individual stories as well as their place in the group - the problem solver, Mother Earth, money man, cheerleader, rock star, ingenue, predictable, social director. The tales of their vacations together was an added bonus. How they each mourned the loss of Teas and George spoke to the relationship they had with them. This story is not soon to be forgotten!
This is a fascinating character driven story. These close friends' lives are so intermingled there is bound to be much beneath the surface. The death of one couple while sailing opens Pandora's Box for the others and forces them to come to grips with their demons, mistakes and their pasts, but also brings out their strengths. The web of their friendship is skillfully revealed a layer at a time by a talented author whose ability to hone in on the details carries the reader along swiftly through the choppy sea of eight complicated lives, both blended as a group and as separate individuals.

While I struggled a bit at first to keep everyone straight, they quickly morphed into clear characters in my mind's eye, each with distinct personalities full of glories and flaws and remained true to themselves throughout. The incorporation of the music that accompanied their lives as well as tidbits about the products they used and places they went built a vivid picture that I thoroughly enjoyed. I found the story very much a page-turner. It rang true as to why people develop such close bonds, what they get from one another and what they give, the fragility of it all as well as the glue. Definitely a good read.
3.5 of 5 stars

When Prominent Nantucket couple Tess and Greg die in a sailing accident, their friends are left with questions as secret affairs and relationships are uncovered. Were there deaths truly accidents, or did something more sinister happen on the salty Atlantic waters?

Told in multiple POVs by the friends and family of Tess and Greg, readers are privy to secrets the characters don't share with each other. Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite writers, but CASTAWAY isn't one of my favorite of Hilderbrand's books. She could have done a better job distinguishing the voices between POVs, and creating more tension to fasten the pace. However, CASTAWAYS was a fun beach read, though not one that stayed with me after I finished the last chapter. I kept expecting something with more depth to appear in the pages, but unfortunately that never happened.
I enjoyed this book, as I knew I would, because I do enjoy the way Elin spins us into the brains of all of her characters. I believe this is the 6th one I have read during this bleak and snowy January. Her books take me out of the present and deposit me on the quaint little island where I have always longed to visit. This one was a bit different because it was the unravelling of a mysterious accident. It didn't hold my attention like the others did which is why I only rated it a four rather than five stars.
This was my first Elin Hilderbrand novel and I definitely enjoyed the read. The story centers around a group of 4 couples, who are best friends, in the aftermath of the death of one couple in a boating accident. The story is told from the perspective of each surviving member. As I said before, I really liked it but wow, what a [...] show! You think you are reading about 8 ordinary, albeit somewhat wealthy, people but behind closed doors, there were hidden desires, illicit affairs, drug abuse, post traumatic stress, jealousy - you name it. There was not a single character in this book that I didn't like, although I would say my least favorite was actually the female victim. We didn't see the story through her perspective since she was dead but from the back story told by everyone else, she just seemed too perfect to me. Otherwise, everyone was interestingly flawed and the character development was great. I think my only complaint was that there was sometimes too much back story for my liking. I know the author used flashbacks to allow the readers to better connect with the characters but there were times when I ended up skimming paragraphs.

A good read and I will definitely read more from the author!
It was too dragged out over the friend's grieving of the dead couple. Got tired of it. Was ready to stop reading the book half way through. But I stuck it out. Have not read any of her other books yet.
I recently discovered Ms. Hilderbrand's books. I read three before choosing The Castaways. I was so disappointed in this last choice. Reasons for my dismay include trudging through portraits of self- absorbed immature adults who drank way too much, representations of lethargic parenting, intrigues that had beyond-detailed back stories (I truly began not to care about them since I wasn't enjoying the characters). Lastly, tying the story together at the end was contrived and too flat in comparison to more spirited endings with a sense of thoughtful closure in the other three books. I will keep reading Ms. Hilderbrand. I just hope I don't meet these characters again.
