I loved every moment of reading this book. I got deeply involved with the characters' lives and found it sad to have the story end. We all have pain in our lives, but it can be a personal choice as to what we do about that pain. In this story, Margaret, the storyteller, shares her life with the readers and takes us on that journey of pain and how to deal with it. It actually reads a lot like a memoir, so much so that, initially, I though it might be nonfiction. I can understand how some readers might not identify with the characters. We all tend to identify with those who have some similarities to ourselves, and I found those similarities in every character in the book. I understood them and wanted them all to thrive and have success in their lives. This will remain in my memory for a long time, and I am highly recommending it to many of my friends. I am not a religious person, and there is an underlying Christian message in the book, but I found it was very broad and non-restrictive enough to appeal to readers of many faiths, or even no faith. It is about believing in life itself.Tags : Some Wildflower in My Heart [Jamie Langston Turner] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I don't always feel led to write a review. But, this is absolutely one of the best books I have ever read. Birdie not only touches Margaret's heart, but Birdie also touched my heart. No actually, I'd have to say Birdie "changes" hearts! A beautifully written story about past pain in Margaret and Birdie's hearts and the contrasting way it affected their lives. Birdie absolutely walks with the Lord Jesus and loves beyond measure everyone she meets. Margaret has let the pain create in her a hard, unemotional heart. This is also such an endearing friendship and Birdie's beautiful love (God's love through her) absolutely changed Margaret's heart! You can not read this book and NOT be changed!
I rarely give a book five stars. This one truly touched my heart. It made me want to "be a Birdie." It showed how small acts of kindness and a willingness to give of your time and self can change those around you; People who have been frozen by hurt can thaw. Birdie was not conjuring up her own love; she was allowing Christ to love through her, and that was her secret. The only negative to this book was the author's continual references to other books and authors. Some of this would be fine, since Margaret was a confirmed reader, but after a while, it stopped adding to the book and was a distraction. It almost seemed as if the author, herself, wanted us to know how well-read she was.
Margaret Tuttle, throughout much of the story, cannot release herself or her step-grandfather from their history of abuse. Margaret has a platonic relationship with her spouse and only superficial with others she encounters. Margaret's mother dies when she is 13 and she is taken in by her grandmother and step-grandfather; God and church are blamed for the damage her supposedly Christian step-grandfather committed upon her.
Birdie Freeman walks into the school cafeteria where Margaret is supervisor, is hired as a cafeteria worker and subtle changes begin for all who encounter Birdie--co-workers, students and teachers are all recipients of Birdie's many kindnesses. The character of Birdie may seem "too good to be true" but her thoughtful acts are things any Christian could do; unfortunately, not everyone thinks like Birdie. Birdie teaches the reader to truly listen to what people like and find special, find joy based on joy given to others, to find humor in difficult situations and most of all to live life as God directs in his Holy Book. Anyone who finishes this beautiful story should walk away with some tips on how to be a blessing to others.
At first I thought since Ms Turner is a writing teacher that her almost pedantic use of the language was funny but as I got to know "Rosie" I came to really understand why she would speak in such a way. The characters in this book are very believable and real. The tragedies, pains, and sorrows are shown to us gently so as not to overwhelm but they are that much more powerful as the means to show us how we all suffer in life and can either turn against ourselves, others and God or use them to enhance our love for ourselves, others and God.--I am a fan of Dr. Dan Allender's books, esp. Wounded Hearts Help for Adult Victims of Childhood Sexual Abuse. In that book he shows how our hearts, our souls, are wounded by abuse and how our own nature and response can serve to poisen us while letting the perpetrator get off scott free so to speak. Our own bitterness and self contempt can become hardness and contempt for others. Dr. Allender writes about this, Ms Turner shows it lived in full bloom. A very poignant story and a story so well crafted as to be a pleasure to read.
This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's very understated story with lots of space for the reader to travel down paths in their own imagination, which as the author himself writes in the epilogue chapter is a sign of a competent writer-quote_"a competent writer communicates through suggestion, his message rises unspoken from between the words of his narrative" . I loved that he didn't fill in all the graphic details of the characters stories, it suited who I am as a reader. If I have any quibble nd it's only small I did get tired of the main character constantly referring to books she had read which seemed to tie in with her thoughts. I found it hard to quite believe anyone could remember the detailed content of so many books. That said it didn't put me off the writer and indeed I look forward to reading more by Mr. Turner. Great job done, thanks and God bless you in your future writings.
