If only all travel books were written as beautifully descriptive as this one was!“The Spell of Egypt” was written by Robert Smythe Hichens (1864-1950), an English journalist, lyricist, novelist, critic, and playwright. This book was published in 1911.Throughout these one hundred pages, the reader is travel companion to Hichens, floating on the Nile, breathing in sunsets, casting hungry eyes on desert sands and ancient columns, hearing the muezzin call all to prayer, and church bells pealing for Heaven-ward petitions. Despite my electronic copy of this book not having illustrations (not sure if the original had them), I could plainly see all of the sights and hear all of the sounds about which Hichens wrote. This entire book is a romantic travel experience, indeed.
I was captivated from the start with this book, and it was difficult to put down. I wish all travel books were written as descriptively beautiful as this one.
Recommended for the lovers of Egypt and travel in general to exotic places.
