The Rest Falls Away Gardella Vampire Chronicles Book 1 Colleen Gleason 9780451220073 Books

The Rest Falls Away was such a fun read! I love the combination of Historical and Paranormal! Victoria is about to have her debut, but she's also about to become the family vampire hunter. Instead of worrying about whether her dance card is full, she has to make sure none of her guests are seduced and killed by a vampire. But Victoria has been training for this her entire life, she's well prepared when a vampire does indeed crash her party. Meanwhile, she's caught the eye of Lord Rockley, but constantly disappearing on him isn't the best way to show she returns his affections.

I really liked The Rest Falls Away's version of vampires and vampire hunters. It's nothing too different from the standard, but it all worked really well with the setting. Vampire hunters, or Venators, are genetic. There's one in every generation of Victoria's family and she's next in line, following her aunt. The vampires are all descendants of Judas (yep, that Judas), with his daughter Lilith being their queen. Of course, the overall plot is Victoria versus Lilith, which was quite exciting at times. I wasn't quite sold on this mysterious book that Lilith was after, since we know next to nothing about what's in it, but it still kept me engaged as Victoria used her brains and her brawn to keep it from falling into the wrong hands.

There is also romance in The Rest Falls Away, but not in the way that you'd expect. Obviously, Victoria is going to live a dangerous life and it's probably better for her to remain single. But she and Lord Rockley hit it off, and he tries to woo her while she tries to keep killing vampires without him knowing. Things do progress and get infinitely more complicated and I really liked that. I do think it's pretty obvious how it was going to turn out, but I was still shocked by that ending. I wasn't expecting it to be quite like that. There are some hints toward a love triangle, but based on how the romance went in this first book, I might be totally wrong and surprised by the direction that it goes!

In the end, I really like The Rest Falls Away. Victoria was a great heroine. She's not perfect, but she's doing her best and not backing down. I am looking forward to getting to know Max and Sebastian more. They're not quite what they seem.

I liked this book quite a bit. I am so glad that I finally was able to get around to reading this book. I am kind of ashamed that I have had a review copy of this book for so long and neglected to read it until now. I really had a good time getting to know Victoria as she worked to find a husband at the same time she was becoming a vampire hunter. This book was a whole lot of fun from beginning to end.

I have read a lot of paranormal romances since it is one of my favorite genres. I haven't read too many that had a historical setting though and I really liked that aspect of this book. I think it would be hard enough to learn to kill vampires without worrying about being a proper lady or finding a husband at the same time. I really liked this aspect of the story and found it to be very well done.

I love a good vampire story so I do have to admit that I liked the parts of the book where Victoria was battling vampires the most in the book. Victoria really has some pretty amazing vampire hunting skills and it was just a lot of fun to watch. When she fought alongside Max, it was even more exciting because the stakes were usually just a bit higher.

I liked the characters in this book. Victoria was tough and not afraid to try to get what she wants in a period of time where that was pretty unusual for a woman. Max was a bit of a mystery but he seemed to always watch out for Victoria. I have a feeling that there is a lot more to learn about it and I am looking forward to that in future installments. Sebastian was a character that I was never fully trusted. It seemed like he was Victoria's ally at times but I was never completely sure. There were other characters that added to the story and were very well done.

I do recommend this book to others. It was just a whole lot of fun to read and I had a great time with it. I am a little mad that I waited so long to start reading this series and can't wait to read more very soon!

I had a co-worker suggest the series to me, and was not disappointed! The first book of the Gardella Vampire Hunters series was beautifully written and is deliciously paced. The story brings us into a world that walks a fine line between formal London society and a shadowy realm of immortal creatures.

It is Victoria’s duty to keep the residents of London safe from the evil that surrounds them, as they dance their waltzes and fret about what color dress to wear to their next party. She is an empowered and beautiful woman who tries in vain to embrace both worlds. She ultimately suffers because of it.

While parts of this story came as a surprise, it only made me more curious to learn more about the world that Victoria lives in. I’m excited to see what comes next for her and would definitely suggest this series to anyone who loves to read Paranormal Fiction!
