i must have missed something here but i thought i was ordering a vegetarian cookbook for the holidays. The premise is great. I've spent 35 years making 2 parallel menus for every holiday to accommodate the family. I thought this would ease that burden. Not the case. It is not a vegetarian cookbook. There are a lot of veggie recipies and i look forward to trying them but chicken is not vegetarian. Chicken broth/stock is not vegetarian. Buyer beware. (I do want to repeat, it is a lovely holiday cookbook that covers MANY holidays, just not what i was expecting in terms of the vegetarianism).Tags : The Healthy Hedonist Holidays: A Year of Multi-Cultural, Vegetarian-Friendly Holiday Feasts [Myra Kornfeld] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Healthy Hedonist Holidays A Year of MultiCultural VegetarianFriendly Holiday Feasts Myra Kornfeld 9780743287258 Books Reviews
I am not basing my review on the turnout of the recipes here. It has many festive, interesting concoctions like, Beer-Braised Brussels Sprouts, Mulled Cider-Cranberry AppleSauce, & Baklava Cups with Almond-Vanilla Tapioca Pudding...
The author has a great section that gives the cook an itinerary on how far in advanced parts of the food, like pie crust, can be prepared. The chapters are split according to the festivity, from Ramadam, to Christmas, to Kwanza, to St Patrick's day. I am about to make some of the recipes. I am going to start with Southwestern Black Bean Dip. let's see how tasty these recipes are.
I spent over half my life being a vegetarian. I am a meat eater now. I struggle with my conscience at times. Something tells me a vegetarian life is better for me personally, mentally & physically. I loaned this book from the library as I am looking back into Vegetarian food, & at 42, I seem to be in the beginning stages of a growing, beautiful relationship with cooking.
The subtitle of this book is, "A Year of Multicultural Vegetarian-Friendly Holiday Feasts." This book contains recipes such as, Maple Sugar-Brined SW- Style Turkey, & Halibut with Pine Nuts, Saffron, & Currants. There were no alternatives, I saw, that are obvious in other books. Things like nut loafs or fancy foods that substitute for a juicy voluptuous stuffed Turkey, etc. However, upon further investigation of the back page, I see the author has tried to construct a book that allows the chef to cater to a family compiled of veges, carnivores, & pescetarians, with a book that caters too everyone. So the book is most suitable for people like me, humans that eat meat, but gravitate towards vegetarian food or for people who have a mixed bunch they are cooking for.
I think for the poor vegetarian who picks this book off the shelf or orders it on , the title page is misleading. It's arguable to have fish recipes in a vegetarian book, let alone poultry. Let's face it, any meat eater that is worried about accommodating a vegetarian over Thanksgiving most likely already has their turkey recipe in mind...
The tagline of this book is "a year of multicultural, vegetarian-friendly holiday feasts," but the back states "each menu offers both a vegetarian and fish or poultry main course." From the front cover, I bought this book for a vegetarian. Unfortunately half of the book is unusable, and frankly as a vegetarian they did not want to personally keep a book with recipes for a breast of duck, flounder, and turkey burgers. So this book was definitely disappointing from that perspective.
The book is organized by holidays, with a nice overview of the holiday, a menu for the event and the recipes following. The recipes are pleasantly unfamiliar, but there are no photos at all in the book. I personally love photos in my cookbooks, so that was another disappointment. Only recommended for their holiday menu ideas, but not at a vegetarian table.
Can't wait to try as many as I can find ingredients for...!
I received Healthy Hedonist Holidays as a gift from a friend who's a professional chef. She assured me this is one cookbook I'll want to use over and over again. At first, I was skeptical, (polite of course, but skeptical) but she was so right!
Here's what I love about this book
1) It's a delicous read; just the titles of these international recipes are enough to send me to an Overeaters Anonymous meeting.
2)These obviously well-tested dishes makes me look like a much more sophisticated cook than I am. Example Last Saturday night, I made the posh-looking Sunflower-crusted Salmon Pinwheels with Watercress Pesto, from the St. Patrick's Day menu ("Wow" factor ten) My husband swears he's never seen his Mom look so blissed out. And she's not even Irish!
3)Thanks to this festive book, I don't have to stress over what to give for the holidays this year! I'm ordering gift-wrapped copies of Healthy Hedonist Holidays for everyone who adores exquisite food, year round. (And that's everyone on my list!)
