Descent Kissed by Death Tara Fuller Books Reviews
The long-awaited finally of the "Kissed by Death" trilogy is here! "Descent" by Tara Fuller brings a great conclusion to this wonderful series. The reader is given the Angel of Joy and the Reaper from Hell. Gwen, the Angel of Joy is a bit different. She isn't just content with being an angel, she wants to experience more than just her angelic self and joy. When Gwen sees a soul get reaped first hand it has a big effect on her. Now she wants to know more; learn more. Gwen is tired of being kept in her little bubble of joy, she wants to see what else is out in the world.
Easton is definitely Gwen's opposite. Easton has a very special job that he has been doing for over four centuries. He is a reaper, which means he reaps the souls that are destined to be sent to hell. Now that Gwen has become some curious with Easton's job, Easton has been given the task by his boss, whom is also Gwen's father, to familiarise Gwen with the job but also why protecting her.
Then the unthinkable happens and Gwen and Easton get stuck in hell. Of course nothing seems to go well at all for the two of them, so they end up having to battle their way out. I think this story keeps up a pretty good pace keeping the reader on their toes. I have to say that the book is a bit darker than the first two but still really good. I think Fuller has done a great job with this series and I was definitely not disappointed in the finale.
I thought the characters were great and very easy to get to know which everyone knows is one of my main things to look at in a story. I feel like each character was able to grow and become a better version of themselves. I look forward to seeing what other young adult novels we will get from Tara Fuller.
Easton, one of Hell's Grim Reapers and one of it's baddest boys. We've seen him through out this series and now it is his turn.
This was a great way to end the trilogy, with Hell's baddest boy and one of Heaven's sweetest angels. Two opposites shoved together after a horrific mistake sends a soul meant for Heaven to Hell. Gwen, daughter to Easton's boss, had become attached to this soul prior to his death, bringing him peace and joy (she is an Angel of Joy) she became almost obsessive her need to know that he finds happiness. I love how multi-layered Gwen was. She isn't the typical emotionally detached Angel in that she craves more than simply doing her 'job', she craves the knowledge of seeing her work completed, in knowing that she has truly helped better the lives of those she is sent to. 'Watching' her struggle with who she believes she should be and who she knows she is and watching her grow as she came into her own was a wonderful thing to see. She may start out as a meek innocent but she soon discovers what she has believed all along, the world is not black and white, it is as layered as she is. Seeing her grow into her strength while keeping her faith and and goodness makes her a truly inspiring heroine.
I am so glad we've finally gotten a look into what makes up Easton. He's always been a complex character and you just knew that if you could get to the 'heart' of him it would make all his rough blurry edges smooth and clear. Okay, so maybe he doesn't end up all shine and new, but his story unfolds and allows us to see how he became Hell's best Grim Reaper. Easton's story is gritty and ugly, there is nothing good about what brought him to this point in his (after) life. Like Gwen he is not as straightforward a character as he would like you to think. He's haunted by his past (in more ways than one) and the belief that he could never be good enough for love. He's hurting (although he won't admit it) because his best friend has moved on and doesn't need him anymore. His counter part in Heaven also found her way and is not longer with him. He's alone, sad, and angry and I can not say after discovering more about him that I blame him for his feelings.
I loved how well Easton and Gwen played off each other. We believe that they are total opposites but learn through out the book that they are more alike than anyone knew. They are a strong couple and together make an unstoppable team. I really enjoyed watching them grow and fall in love.
There are a lot of difficult moments in this book. Things get pretty dark and vivid at times and for that reason alone I suggest 15 and up for this YA. Easton lived a very painful life, death, and afterlife and while that makes a wonderful story for redemption some of it can get pretty graphic, just know that going in.
This is a great series for any fans of Paranormal YALit. It reminds me a bit of Amy Bartol's Premonition Series, but for a little bit younger crowd. It's got it all, Angels, Reapers, Redemption, Love and Faith.

I love this unusual scenario of Angel of Joy and Reaper for Hell. The pairing is very unlikely but Tara Fuller writes it in a believable way. It helps that angel Gwen has an unquenchable need to ‘fix’ Easton. I want to give this a 3.75 but there are some really sweet moments between Gwen and Easton so it has to be a 4.0.
Gwen is kind of an odd angel in that she wants to experience more than just her angelic joy. When one of her human charges accidentally gets taken to Hell, she’s determined to get him out. She’s foolishly, but outstandingly, brave in descending into the pits of Hell, but at least she picks the right guy to bring her there – Easton!
Easton is a cool guy/reaper and doesn’t take guff from anyone, though he’s a bit moody. He even has a conscience about having to bring Gwen down into Hell, but he pretty much has no choice when Balthazar, Gwen’s father and Easton’s boss, commands him. I also think he punishes himself unnecessarily for his own past but then maybe it’s Gwen’s role to bring him out of it.
It’s interesting that when they touch, part of their elemental natures (misery versus joy) seep into each other, starting to create a better balance.
The author rotates the POV between both Gwen and Easton, and I liked seeing what they’re both thinking. The growing attachment between them is well timed and sweet. Amazingly Easton is willing to endure hellish pain for Gwen, and she for him, showing their growing feelings for each other.
Their journey into Hell is well done with torturous misery at every turn, and various unsavoury characters.
Overall, I was still looking for a little more depth, but Descent is very entertaining and I think Easton will be the next book boyfriend hottie! Unexpected ending.
My favourite quote on Page 125
“Your jokes are terrible,” he finally said.
I shrugged, resting my chin on my knees. “I like them.”
“So do I,” he said. “But then again I’m kind of wired to enjoy terrible things.”
This was the BEST OF the series. I cannot lie . LOVE all of them, but this one touched me. Good job Tara. Keep looking forward for more.
