I really wanted to give this book 4 stars since it is one of the better, if not the best, book in the Blue Heron series, but I just couldn't bring myself to go beyond 3--just average--because even though it's better than others in the series it still has many of the same fundamental problems that make it hard to love. Perhaps if I hadn't been a longtime reader of Kristan Higgins and known that she is much much better than The Blue Heron Series, I could have gone for the 4, but because she has so many great books this series as a whole was rather disappointing. I wish I hadn't read this series, as it's tainted my opinion of Ms. Higgins and have left me hesitant to read any additional books from an author that used to be on my favorites list.***spoilers***
All the books in this series just have way too much filler and not enough actual plot or chemistry, and are riddled with very unlikable characters. Most of the book focuses on the back stories of Emmaline and Jack and their exes, who were both very dislikable characters - so having them take up so much book space made it hard to enjoy - I felt like I knew more about Emmaline & Kevin's and Jack & Hadley's relationships than I did about Em & Jack's. And it seemed like the author built up Kevin, Emmaline's ex, to eventually have some big revelation that he was a giant a** and end up properly apologetic - but when the "apology" scene finally comes, he is still nothing but a grade A jerk and it's difficult to reconcile the person Em claimed he was while they were together with the guy Ms. Higgins presents to the reader since they are on two opposite ends of the personality extremes. As for Jack, he's Mr. Overly Nice Guy to everyone else, especially his ex-wife - who is blatantly mean to Em all the time right in front of him - but the first minute Em does something "not nice" to his wife, which was just doing her job, he flies off the handle in a rage at her and leads to them breaking up. Even though Jack's marriage wasn't very long (less than a year), he still put up with far more hellacious behavior from his ex-wife, yet Em upsets him one little itty bitty time and he readily agrees to ending their relationship. I just felt like Em and Jack's relationship never really developed and it was hard to understand how Em fell in love with him so quickly. Yeah, he was nice to be her date to her ex-fiancee's wedding, but back home nearly every interaction they had together was short and interrupted by Hadley. There were a few past tense references to long times spent together but the reader never got a real-time glimpse at those times together, and the one time we got a scene where they spent an extended amount of time together (the dinner with his family) he ignored her the entire night.
Their relationship just felt forced - Em was annoyed by Hadley's schemes but never seemed angry or upset by them, she never gets upset, mad or confrontational with Jack even when he acts like a jerk and treats her poorly, then she was sad when they break up and she saw him supposedly getting back together with Hadley but never seemed devastated by it - you'd think if she were really that in love with him she'd have more feelings. Emmaline had the potential to be such a great character - with her being a cop and a hockey player I expected her to be a strong woman that knew her own mind, would stand up for herself and would give as good as she got, instead she was mousey, timid and weak and let guys use her and walk all over her. I also expected her to not fall in love so quickly - for as long as she was together with Kevin and the way he supposedly crushed her heart, as well as her reluctance to go out with Jack when they get back home, I thought she would have more trust issues and be a harder sell. In fact, I thought Mr. Wonderful would be the one to fall first and have to convince her she loved him too - instead, the minute he shows her even just the tiniest amount of attention, she's head over heels. As for Jack, the entire town makes him out to be a god, he's supposed to be all sorts of kind and wonderful - the entire Blue Heron series has built Jack up to be The Perfect Man, so I expected him to be more romantic, more charming, more giving, more brokenhearted when their relationship ends and more apologetic when he tries to win her back. He spends the whole book being distraught and having PTSD over not being able to save a reckless driver even though he saved the three passengers - but the supposed love of his life ends their relationship and he doesn't even seem to really care, even when they were together he only ever seemed to look right through her. I expected some sort of 'aha' moment and a grand gesture on his part then a big scene filled with reluctance on her part before they got their happily ever after - instead it was literally a one page scene that was simply "Hi Em. I'm sorry Em. I guess I love you Em" "Okay, I love you too" The End. It was just so weak and anticlimactic.
There's so much potential in this book for it to be so much better than it was, but every time I thought it might start living up to that potential it just ended up falling flat and disappointing. It's like Ms. Higgins was under a contractual obligation to churn out X number of books in X amount of time, so she wrote this very formulaic series with as little effort as possible just to fulfill her obligations. But as the books in this series range from 430 pages to 470 pages each, the reader should have so much more knowledge of the characters and their relationship. At that many pages, the reader should know them inside and out, upside and backwards, and be so invested in them and their relationship that they feel as though the really know the characters. Instead you're left with so much fluff, filler and back story that the books tend to drag on and you're left at the end scratching your head and wondering who they characters really are and how could they have possibly fallen in love. ...after going back and reading my review before posting, I almost feel like I should downgrade it to 2 stars, but I'll leave the 3 just because it was better than the others in the series.

In Your Dreams The Blue Heron Series Kristan Higgins 9780373779314 Books Reviews
Jack Holland and Emmaline Neal get their turn in the fourth Blue Heron book.
The Good
-The writing I will alway love Ms. Higgins’ writing style and the feeling of familiarity at visiting Manningsport, New York. There are alot of returning characters from the previous books and it feels like old home week. My very first Higgins book was The Best Man, so Manninsport is near and dear to me. I just love this little ‘verse alot.
-Solid heroine Emmaline is the antithesis of a damsel in distress and I love her for that. Physically she’s strong, but not dainty, a woman who can handle herself and emotionally she’s self-deprecating, a little insecure but when it matters she’s smart and insightful, seeing Jack’s PTSD and helping him without making him defensive.
-A good beta hero Jack’s prepared his whole life to help others. He’s hardwired to be a hero, but when the moment comes, he’s haunted by the one he couldn’t save. He’s the kind of guy that’s in tune with women, having been raised and surrounded by strong women all his life, but when he’s ready to settle down, he finds the one Southern fried damsel that he shouldn’t have married.
-Romance, not just sex I love a good sex scene, but Ms. Higgins’ strength is in conveying the intimacy in love scenes in a subtle manner ( though I would have liked more of them).
The (Not that) Bad and (Mostly) Everything In Between
-Story focused on separate lives instead of their romance I would have liked more interaction between Jack and Emmaline. Alot of time was spent setting up their past relationships and why they failed, and frankly those characters (Kevin, Naomi and Hadley) were for the most part unpleasant and I didn’t want to spend that much time with them. I understood their importance to setting up Jack and Emmaline’s motivations, I just thought they took up too much time.
I was genuinely wondering how the story was going to transition to romance, because there wasn’t alot of interaction between them. When Emmaline says she’s in love with Jack, I felt that I needed more of them alone together to really believe it. And I would have liked to see more from Jack as well.
-Standalone, but not really I’ve read the other books, but if I hadn’t there’s alot that would be missed. There are many characters and so many relationships were set up in previous books that it would lose something not having read the other books. While the other leads were strictly supporting, there’s just alot going on in this tiny town for a newbie.
-Anti-climactic ending Jack and Emmaline’s reunion scene was sweet, but I couldn’t help but want a conversation between them to hash out why they fought in the first place to precede it.
The Bottom Line
I really liked it, although I wanted more of Jack and Emmaline. I’d recommend for those looking for a good chick lit but I’d also recommend reading the earlier books first. If you’ve read Blue Heron before, I think you’ll enjoy it.
