I was very disappointed when I received my copy The Raven and other poems. The book is in fine condition for it's age and shipped quickly. However, the description did not mention in any way that this edition was only 3.25"x4". This is not addition that I hoped it would be to my bookshelf.

The Raven The Other Poems sch Cl Scholastic Classics Edgar Allan Poe 9780439224062 Books Reviews

“The Raven and Other Poems” is a book of poems written by Edgar Allan Poe. “The Raven” was written four years before Poe’s death. To this day, it is one of Poe’s most famous pieces of poetry. Almost every individual uses Poe’s “The Raven” when speaking about literature and amazingly written pieces. This compilation of poems features an introduction written by Philip Pullman, an English author. Many of Pullman’s books have been best-selling, most notably his fantasy trilogy “His Dark Materials” and a fictionalized take on the life of Jesus. Pullman has a rather interesting way of introducing the book, it is written in the way of simply talking to the reader through text. Pullman’s introduction definitely sets the mood for what the rest of the book may be.

Not only did Poe write poetry, but also stories. Some well known stories Poe has written include “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.” These tales definitely reveal Poe’s talent at its greatest height. Many of the pieces of literature Poe wrote revolved around events which took place around him. An example of this would be his famous “Annabel Lee,” which was a eulogy written for a posthumous maiden “in a kingdom by the sea,” as said in the eulogy. The main theme of his poetry is surrounding the idea of losing a loved one or someone who was an acquaintance. However, his poetry is very open to interpretation and could be depicted in different ways according to the reader’s state of mind.

To me, “The Raven and Other Poems” is an extremely well written piece. One of my personal favorites from this collection is “To Helen.” “To Helen” is a three stanza poem. It is also another one of Poe’s works that are very well known. This particular poem has even been called one the most beautiful love poems in the English language. The subject of this poem is a woman who becomes, in the eyes of Poe, a personification of the classical beauty of Greece and Rome. If you are a fan of mystery or eerie poetry, I would 100% recommend this collection. All of the poems will leave a chilling, almost even haunting, feeling. Poe uses his words in such a mysterious and vague way. While this may be a problem in literature, Poe has somehow made it work. His poems will leave you feeling an enormous amount of emotions.
Full disclosure I did not purchase this through . The book itself is a quality item, with good paper, binding, and typesetting. The illustrations of Edmund Dulac really add to the effect of reading Poe's work. Although Poe is best known for his fiction, in my opinion he was far better at writing poetry than he was at storytelling. From horror, to the pain of loss, to wistful romance, chances are good that you'll find something to suit your fancy in "The Raven and Other Poems." This book does not contain all of Poe's verse, but most of it, and all his best poems are included. They are as follows (in order)

There is also a short (five page) introduction to Poe's work, an index of first lines, and an index of Dulac's color plates. This is an excellent, inexpensive hard cover edition of Poe's best verse, and I highly recommend it. My personal favorite is Dream - Land; I just love the final stanza, which reads

By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have wandered home but newly
From this ultimate dim Thule.

And lest you think Poe was all about the macabre, check out this stanza from "For Annie"

She tenderly kissed me,
She fondly caressed,
And then I fell gently
To sleep on her breast -
Deeply to sleep
From the heaven of her breast.

Powerful stuff, and top marks from me.
This was a purchase for my children as I like them to keep reading and learning to further their education. They enjoyed it.
